If you don't know already, I am a partner of Missouri Star Quilt Company! Who doesn't love MSQC?! I know I do!
Recently they asked if I would like to design a Christmas ornament with a tutorial and of course I jumped on that opportunity! So they sent me a layer cake of Frost & Flurry by Sheri McCully and I was off!
I decided to use one of Missouri Star's templates for it!
Here are my cutie ornaments... (:
So you will need a template (you can make your own, or find a printable template online also!), felt in a color of your choice, scrap fabrics, and a perl cotton thread.
First you will cut your fabric into strips that are 1"x5". Now this is to make a specific template, so you will need to look at yours and decide if your fabric needs to be cut longer than 5"! This is just what works for this one!
Next you will want to take your strips, mix them up however you would like and sew them together! I found that six strips made the correct width for my template. Yours may need more, so keep that in mind. I then traced my template and cut it out leaving a 1/2" edge around it for sewing. This reduces the bulk on the edges at the end and looks cleaner.
You will then cut your felt to fit your template. You want to make sure that you have about 1/2" at least on each side of it, do a little more if you want some wiggle room! Cut two of these. One for the back and one for the front.
Now using a fabric marker, or chalk pencil, trace your template on the felt and cut it out! Make sure you leave the outside edge whole. Only cut your template out in the middle!
Layer your sewn fabric in the middle of the felt pieces with the cut out template on top!
Now you will stitch all the way around the edge of your ornament on the inside edge.
And it will look like this! (:
Next you will choose your favorite thread color that coordinates with your fabric and felt, and do a big running stitch around the edge to add some decoration.
And last you trim around the edge leaving about a 1/2" around to give it its shape! Attach a ribbon or thread to hang it on your tree!
I can't wait to hang these on my sewing room tree this winter season!
Don't forget you can get all your supplies at Missouri Star Quilt Company! They really are wonderful! www.missouriquiltco.com
If you make an ornament make sure you show me! I would love to share them!
Until next time,
Kimberly (:
